Beware of Voodoo cams!

So I did most of the work of installing the voodoo cam part number 60404 and I was checking the lift numbers on the new hughes 1.6 rockers and the numbers were just way off from what I was expecting (they were still off from where the were supposed to be but that is a different matter). I was seeing lift around .525-.535 depending on pushrod length, and I was expecting to see lift in the range of .565. Needless to say I was very concerned. I went on a bit of a tangent thinking that the rockers were actually 1.5 ratio and not 1.6 ratio but all of the testing I had done seems to suggest that they are pretty close to 1.6.

Long story short last night I found out that the cam isn't what it says it is. I measured pushrod travel with the dial indicator and I got .330 on the intake and .342 on the exhaust. Multiplying these cam lift numbers by 1.5 to get their advertised lift numbers you get precisely .495 intake and .513 exhaust, which is exactly the lift advertised for the 60403 cam. Needless to say I was pissed off. I already had the front of the engine buttoned up at this point and I had to tear it back down.

I pulled the cam out of the car last night and it is scribed incorrectly...it says 60404!

I would have caught this when centerlining the cam if I was more thorough, I only checked the intake centerline on the cam, not the max lift or duration at .050. Imagine how perplexed I would have been if I had blindly continued forward with this cam...it woudln't have been what I was expecting at all!

Moral of the story CHECK CAM LIFT AND DURATION AS WELL AS INTAKE CENTERLINE BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE TIMING COVER AND WATER PUMP!

Yep!
If you would have fully degreed it you would have found it earlier.
But seriously that really sucks.
It makes you wonder what kind of quality control they have.
I'm wondering what Lunati has to say about this.

They are not the only ones to do that. I bought a Hughes heh3742 and when we degreed the cam it was the next size smaller. Shipped it back and Hughes paid all shipping and sent the right one out.

I'm sure Lunati would go good for it. I think this falls under 'manufacturer's defect warranty'. They may not know it's happening, and you could save several people lots of grief by letting Lunati know their mistake.

If I see the same thing again I will certainly let them know. In fact if I see it again I might go ahead and get something different.
